Farm Bureau Board Meeting
August 24, 2010
President Kevin Underwood called the meeting to order at 7:12
p.m. He led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s
Prayer.
There
were 16 officers and directors and 3 guests present.
President
Underwood then introduced Max Bales, Ivy Tech Development Director
and former Dist 3 Farm Bureau regional manager. Max informed us of
the September 2nd “An Evening on the Farm” at Historic
Prophetstown, the Pathway Program, which can lead to a Bachelors
degree from Purdue University, and the agriculture programs
available at Ivy Tech.
Kenny
Miller moved and Larry Underwood seconded a motion to spend $1000
for helping to sponsor “An Evening on the Farm”. Motion passed.
Jerry
Arvin moved and David Korty seconded a motion to accept the June 28
minutes after correction. Craig Fuller was added to the attendance
record. Motion passed.
Craig
Fuller moved and George Lumley seconded a motion to accept the
Treasurers report. Motion passed.
David
Korty, 1st V. P. passed around correspondence received in
the last month. Thank you’s were received from Washington
Citizenship Focus Trip recipient; Caleb Nagel, Champions of Animal
Care recipients; Elizabeth Byers (spokesperson), Hannah Bowman
(t-shirt), Queen contest participants; Allison Harp, Lauren
Gellenbeck, Karley Davis Abigail Adams, Denise Strueh, Stephanie
Horn, and Kara Martin.
Women’s
Leader, Mary Anne Workman, thanked all of her helpers, and judge
David Garrett, for their work at the Flower Show. There were 31
entries, Winners were: Leah Skinner – Award of Distinction for
Artistic Division, Keith Brown – Award of Distinction for
Horticultural Division, and Keith Brown – Best of Show.
Mary Anne
announced the Dist III meeting on Sept. 7th at the Jasper
County Fairgrounds at 6:30 p.m. with a silent auction to benefit
District II Farm Bureau scholarships.
She also
stated that each county has been asked to design and quilt a 9” x 9”
block to represent agriculture in their county. Each block will be
used to make a quilt to be auctioned off at the State Farm Bureau
Convention last general session. The proceeds will go to the
Indiana Food Banks and the quilt will hang in the Indiana Statehouse
during the month of March, at which time the buyer will gain
possession. Call Mary Anne with suggestions for our county’s block.
Contact
Mary Anne for applications to the Ace Ambassador Program. The next
trip will be to Arizona in 2011. Applications are due February 1,
2011.
Mary Anne
and Dale Workman, Janet and Jerry Arvin all helped at the Farm
Bureau building at the State Fair.
Mary Anne
also congratulated Roger and Nancy Verhey for their “River Friendly
Farmer” award from the Indiana Soil and Water Conservation.
Larry Underwood gave the safety report on grain bin
safety.
Kevin
reported for Local Affairs. The County Council is down to $220,000
to cut from the county budget requests after beginning with $2.5
million to cut.
Tippecanoe County Farm Bureau will meet with the County
Commissioners and County Council on September 14th.
Dave
Korty reported that we need 4 new voting members before September 20th.
Betsy
Underwood, Little Farmers Chair, thanked everyone who helped with
the parade, and the judges, Linda Phillips, Judy Buck, and Randy
Truitt.
Public
Relations Chair, Roger Verhey, reported on the County Fair booth.
Larry
Underwood reported that the “Champions of Animal Care” program
spokesperson was Elizabeth Byers. T-shirts were given to 10% of the
members of the beef, swine, sheep, goat, poultry, and rabbit
species. He suggested that we send thank-you notes to the Extension
office and the Superintendents for their help with the program.
Following
a presentation of various rates and terms by Treasurer Lloyd Leamon,
Jerry Arvin moved and Craig Fuller seconded a motion to move our
maturing August 28 certificate of deposit to Lafayette Community
Bank for 27 months. Motion passed.
Craig
Fuller moved and Sue Leamon seconded to adjourn at 8:46 p.m.
