TIPPECANOE COUNTY FARM BUREAU BOARD MEETING
May
23,2006
The meeting opened with the County President, Kevin Underwood,
asking all to stand for the Pledge To The American Flag and The
Lord's Prayer.
Gary Brownlee, Insurance Manager, reported the east side
insurance office will soon be moving across the street to a
building with double the space and more parking area.. The
Tippecanoe County agency has grown to 10 agents and the main
office, on 350 South, will soon have a better sign out front.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is coming out with a new auto
program come August 1st.
Lisa Taylor, an office secretary who has been ill, will return
to work June 15th.
The insurance agents also plan to help" pop-com" at the county
fair in July.
Eric Steele was guest speaker. He is with a company called Fore
Point Networks that brings high speed internet to rural areas.
For a reasonable fee those of us in the county may also receive
wireless internet, the key in communications. Several members
asked interesting questions.
Kevin asked if there were any corrections or additions to the
minutes of the March 27 meeting. Craig Fuller asked if the
questions on the last check register had been answered. Eleanor
said the $138.52 void check had been added back in on March 28th
and the State Office has requested our county buy stamps for all
our mailings rather than they go through the insurance account.
Jerry Arvin made a motion to accept the minutes, Craig seconded
and the motion passed. After checking over the March and April
check register, George Lwnley made a motion they be approved,
Jerry seconded and that motion passed.
WOMEN - Janet Kemper had called and wanted to remind us of the
flower show at the County Fair, the clocks for the Fair Queen
contest and the Fall District III Seminar at Delphi. Sherry
Underwood is on the Fair Queen committee and she has already
order the clocks for all the contestants. There will be a
Farming The Classroom training session at the end of the
District Fall Seminar and our county is in need of volunteers.
YOUNG FARMERS - There is a Summer Conference planned for June
10th and 11'° in Fort VI ujuC.
SAFETY - Larry Underwood suggested we call the local fire
department or the Sheriff s office if you are going to burn a
fence row or brush pile. In case someone calls 911, when they
see your blaze and smoke, they will already know what is going
on at that location and not send the fire department out.
LOCAL AFFAIRS - Kevin plans a dinner meeting with County
Government Officials and later another meeting with School Board
members.
STATE LEGISLATIVE - Larry reported there were 34 candidates, or
their representatives, at the April 4th Meet The Candidate
Meeting and 64 Farm Bureau members. Everyone felt it was a great
turn-out and Tom Turpin did a nice job keeping things moving.
Larry thanked all who helped in any way and Kathleen Miller said
a special thanks should go to Larry for a job well done.
Larry gave a short report of the short session of the State
Legislature.
MEMBERSHIP - It was reported Tippecanoe county needs 78 more voting
members, to make their goal by September 30th, and 934 associate
members.
LITTLE FARMERS - Betsy Underwood is planning for the Pet Parade and
the Flower and Hobby Show during the county fair. The judges will
soon be secured and publicity and posters are planned.
PUBLIC RELATIONS - Eleanor is to let Roger Verhey know the insurance
agents will help with the pop com and others are looking for a list
of helpers by the June meeting.
Kenneth Miller said he heard a report they are wanting to close the
Veteran's Home, near Battle Ground. He thought we should keep an eye
on that because there is a waiting list to get into the home yet
there seems to be many empty beds.
Kevin asked if the June board meeting could be changed to Monday the
26th, this would be the Awards Teamwork dinner prepared and served
by the District III officers. All agreed to the change. The time and
place will be on the meeting notice.
Kevin then asked about changing the regular board meeting from the
4th Tuesday to the 4th Monday. Those present agreed but thought it
should be voted on at the next meeting with so few present because
of field work.
DISTRICT REPORT - Janice Deno
was attending a tri-state staff meeting in Ohio but her report was
passed out. A special note was made about the District III summer
meeting to be at the Jasper County Fairgrounds on June 29th. A
training workshop for livestock farmers will be at 4 p.m., CST,
followed by dinner and the evening program at 6 p.m., CST.
The meeting adjourned and Kathleen and Kenny Miller, from Tippecanoe
township, served refreshments of cookies, cup cakes and drinks.
