TIPPECANOE COUNTY FARM BUREAU BOARD MEETING
March
27, 2006
County President, Kevin Underwood, called the 7 p.m. meeting to
order by asking all to stand for the Pledge to The American Flag
and the Lord's Prayer.
He then asked Larry Underwood, chair of the State Legislative
and Meet The Candidate meeting, to report on the upcoming April
4th meeting. (Larry said shoe laces were invented on this date
in 1790) He said Beutler Meats are preparing the meal except the
desserts which each Farm Bureau family is expected to bring and
table service will be provided. Tom Turpin has been asked to be
the Master of Ceremony
The meeting is to be in the Home Economics Building at the Fair
Grounds with the meal starting at 6:30 p.m. He asked for
volunteers to set up tables at 1 p.m. that day and those are
Lloyd Leamon, Kevin, George Lumley, David Korty and Larry. He
then asked for volunteers to help serve food and arrive at 5:30
p.m. and those are; Kathleen Miller, Sue Leamon, Mary Ann
Workman, Nancy Verhey, Eleanor Laffoon-Altepeter. Larry is to be
sure to have name tags ready for the candidates and Farm Bureau
members.
Ellen DeFreese made a motion to accept the January 24th board
meeting minutes. Helen Nesbitt seconded the motion and it
passed. After questions about a $138.52 void check not being
added back into the checking account and why all at once we are
buying coils of stamps, Alan Kemper made a motion to pass the
check register providing the office secretary can answer or
correct those questions. Kathleen 2nd the motion and it carried.
Dale Workman, 1St Vice President, read a thank you note from
Roberta Crabtree, Ag Days Committee Chair, for all of the great
help to make Ag Days a success. Over 1800 fourth grade students
from the area are now aware of how important agriculture is in
their lives. He also had a letter and certificate from State
President, Don Villwock, thanking our county for the $500
contribution to the Indiana Agriculture Law Foundation.
EXTENSION - Byron Metzger
also thanked all for their Ag Days help. He reported County Fair
dates for 2006 are July 2200 to the 29th and for 2007 as July
21St to the 28th. A school to write Grants is planned for April
12th and May 3rd. An on-line Bull Sale is scheduled for
April13lh at the Extension office. The League of Women Voters
plan a type of debate for those running for county prosecutor en
April 26th a.'1d the Master Gardeners will have displays in the
Hog Barn on April 29th.
August 15th is the new starting date for the Beef Barn at the
Fair Grounds. Rules, regulations and much paper work, delayed
the start for a completion before the county fair date. The
committee is working hard and there have been many donations.
WOMEN - Nancy Verhey, Assistant Leader, reported the District
Spring Seminar was held at the Trails on March 23rd. Those
attending from this county were; Kathleen Miller, Gene and Helen
Nesbitt, Edna Blue, Helena Byers, Doris Craig, Thelma Whitehead,
Janet Kemper, Eleanor Laffoon-Altepeter along with Bob, Karen
and Anthony Laffoon. Kathleen reported the ACE Ambassadors. Mike
and Pam Beard. gave an interesting slide talk on their trip to
Brazil, South America.
YOUNG FARMERS - Josh Cox said
their group received the "Awakening Award" at the Young Fanner
Conference in January for rejuvenating the county program. Their
basketball meetings have been well attended. The group is planning a
trip into Ohio for the week-end of April 2nd.
SAFETY - Eleanor cautioned all to be aware of problems if a wall
outlet or switch plate is hot or discolored. If your car hits a
utility pole the power lines may fall on the car, stay in the car
unless there is a fire than exit by making a big jump to clear the
car without touching it and the ground at the same time.
COMMODITY - Lloyd thanked all who helped with Ag Days too. He
especially wanted to thank Charles McCorkle and Janet Kemper for all
the items they bring to complete the booths. He wanted all to be
aware of the equipment tax break now available on property taxes.
ENVIRONMENT - George asked all to be extra careful, with planting
season so near, with the storing and handling of all chemicals.
MEMBERSHIP - Dale reported
there are 6 new voting members for a total of 964 or 90% of our
quota. The associate members increased by 226 new members, a total
of 3862, or 78% of quota.
INFORMATION - Ellen DeFreese reminded all those who want the
newsletter sent to their home to call Rhonda at the office at
474-6466 or let her know.
PUBLIC RELATIONS - Roger Verhey, 2nd Vice President, said April 22
is the Imagination Station "Hands on Trucks" date and our county
plans to be there. He passed around a sign-up sheet for workers to
man the County Fair booth. The new "wheel" has arrived and questions
and answers are needed before it is used.
Kevin sent around a sheet for all to sign to let him know which
committees they would like to serve on. Also a sign up sheet was
sent around for hosts for the board meetings. We selected dates that
may be used for the Teamwork Award meal prepared by the District 3
officers and staff.
