George Lumley offered a Blessing before 34 board members and
guests enjoyed a 6:30 p.m. steak dinner prepared by the District
III officers as the Teamwork Award, an award Tippecanoe County
had won.
Kevin Underwood, County President, opened the business meeting
at 7: 15 with all facing east for the Pledge to the American
Flag and saying the Lord's Prayer.
Kevin then called on Kendell Culp, District Director, for
remarks. Kendell thanked Eleanor for providing a place for the
meeting and congratulated the county for again winning the
Teamwork Award. This award is scored by the county getting
points for activities they have been involved in during the past
year, the more active a county is the more points they may
obtain. Farm Bureau delegates from over the state met in
Indianapolis on August 26th for their delegate session. With
Indianapolis expanding the Convention Center they are expecting
larger conventions and this seems to have pushed the smaller
Farm Bureau convention to look in other areas. As of now the
2008 State Convention will be in Evansville and the 2009
convention in Fort Wayne, unless they look at a different time
of year.
Janet Kemper, District III Woman Leader, announced the District
III Fall Seminar will be September 8th at the Wabash and Erie
Canal Conference Center in Delphi. An interesting program is
planned and reservations are needed for the lunch. The Carolyn
Burkle Scholarship. has been raised from $500. to $1,000. This
scholarship is for high school seniors to fill out and is due to
Janet by March P., 2007.
Kevin asked for corrections or additions to the June minutes.
Bryon Metzger's name was misspelled but will be corrected. A
question was asked about checks written for the flower show that
seemed incomplete on the check register, Nancy was able to
explain that. George made a motion to accept the minutes from
the June board meeting and the June and July check register.
Kenneth Miller seconded the motion and it passed.
WOMEN - Nancy Verhey, Acting Woman Leader, reported the Lugar
Essay Contest, for 8th graders, is due to her by October 1"fh.
She said entries to the Flower Show, at the county fair, were
down this year and Dave Garrett, the judge, advised maybe more
publicity was needed.
SAFETY - With fall harvest just around the comer be extra
careful when moving a grain auger near electric power lines. One
careless mistake can kill.
COMMODITY - Lloyd Leamon said their marketing meeting followed
the teleconference. It was a very interesting meeting but only 9
attended. He thanked Jason and Jeanise Buck for their help.
LOCAL AFFAIRS - Kevin reported they did get a county budget
passed and it will allow for a
2% salary increase for county employees. He hopes to
have a board meeting with County Government officials in November.
NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE - Alan Kemper commented on the American Farm
Bureau Federation officially calling on Congress to extend the 2002
Farm Bill for another year.
MEMBERSHIP - Dale Workman, 15t Vice President, reported in early
August Tippecanoe County was at 96% of the voting membership goal
and 92% of the total membership goal.
LITTLE FARMERS - Betsy Underwood said there were 38 children entered
in 20 classes at the Tuesday evening Pet Parade during the County
Fair. The parade seems to be getting bigger and better each year, we
are growing.
PUBLIC RELATIONS - Nancy, speaking on behalf of Roger Verhey, said
she thought they used between 400 and 500 pounds of popcorn again
this year at the county fair booth. All shifts seemed to be well
run, the help of the Insurance Agents was much appreciated. There
needs to be more questions put on the "wheel" before another year.
Jerry Arvin suggested arrangements for the Fair Booth be made in
April and the shift schedules be in the minutes long before the
county fair.
Dale and Mary Ann Workman introduced Rick and Katherine Bennett who
are now living in Shelby Township. Katherine's mother was former
District IV Woman Leader, Rosemary Crouch.
DISTRICT REPORT - Janice Deno said a membership from now until the
last of September is still $27.50, after that we will be billed
$32.50 per year for a membership. There is a Drainage meeting in
Indianapolis on September 6th. Our state conventions are open to the
public not just Farm Bureau members. The next convention is December
8th and 9th, 2006. Tippecanoe has an attendance goal of 40 persons
this year. The AFBF Convention is in Salt Lake City, January 7th to
the 10th, 2007, reservations are being,taken now.
The next
Annual Meeting will be February 26th, 2007. The next Board Meeting
