County Farm Bureau President, Kevin Underwood, opened the 7:30
p.m. meeting asking all to stand for the Pledge To The American
Flag and praying The Lord’s Prayer.
Three
officers from the Harrison High School FFA Chapter along with
their advisor, Nichole Parker, were our guests. They each gave
reports of what their organization’s activities were during the
past year. Membership seems to be larger this year than the 35
members of last school year, three -fourths of the members are
girls and one-fourth boys. Projects are; collecting food for
Food Finders; 30 members worked at different activities at the
State Fair; several members worked at both the Beef and Pork
tents at the County Fair; introduced 1st graders, of
Burnett’s Creek, to agriculture; several attended both the State
and National FFA Conventions; visited other FFA Chapter’s
meetings; started their our plants at Harrison’s greenhouse;
planted plants at Green Tree; many worked at Ag Days at the
fairgrounds in March; brought animals to nursing homes and
recycle. Plans for the coming year include Trick or Treat for
Cancer and with the National FFA Convention being in
Indianapolis they hope all members will be able to attend.
At
the conclusion of their presentation Kevin presented them with a
check, from Farm Bureau, toward their many projects.
INSURANCE - Gary Brownlee,
manager, said it is budget time for their organization and he
would like to meet with members of Incorporated. He read a thank
you note from the family of Aly McCann who was killed in an auto
accident near Indianapolis.
At this point the meeting
broke for refreshments served by Janet and Jerry Arvin,
Sheffield Township.
Kevin called the meeting to
order again and asked for approval of the August minutes. There
is one correction, Sheffield Township was to serve as host for
this meeting and not the Young Farmers. Kenneth Miller made a
motion to approve the minutes with the correction to be made.
Gene Nesbitt seconded and the motion passed. David Korty made a
motion to accept the check register, Lloyd Leamon seconded and
that motion carried.
CORRESPONDENCE - Dale
Workman, 1st Vice President, read thank you notes
from Chelsea Anderson, Mary Douglas and Katie Keiser for the
clocks for the Fair Queen contest. A note from Kathy Vernon for
the Local Government Affairs dinner meeting. Andrea Pluckebaum
thanked the group for sponsoring her trip to the Washington DC
Citizenship Focus.
YOUNG FARMERS - Josh Cox,
president, said the June 11 picnic at Columbia Park was well
attended. The group worked at the Little Hands on the Farm
exhibit at the State Fair. They are beginning to look forward
to getting together for winter basketball and their meetings
again.
SAFETY - Eleanor reported that 21% of farm
fatalities are the result of collisions involving vehicles colliding
with tractors and farm machinery. Farmers make sure your “SLOW
MOVING VEHICLE” signs are clean, bright and in good repair and all
reflectors and hazard light are not being blocked by the equipment
you are towing. Jerry Arvin asked all the be extra cautious when
school buses are in your driving area.
COMMODITY - Lloyd said grain
prices were down today, soybeans 10 cents and corn 2 cents. He
reported the use of biodiesel has almost doubled in the last two
years.. Thousands of school children in the Chicago area are
breathing cleaner air, thanks to biodiesel now being used in the
more than 1,400 school buses of the Cook-Illinois Corporation.
MEMBERSHIP - Dale said our county
is still in need of 3 voting members, by September 30th,
and 118 non-voting members. The state Farm Bureau needs 1200
members to meet their goal.

NEW
BUSINESS - Lloyd, chair of the nominating committee, and committee
members, George Lumley, Marie McCorkle, Helen Nesbitt and Alan
Kemper, are still working toward getting a County Woman Leader.
CHICAGO 4-H TRIP - Kevin gave a report on this achievement trip
which was September 17th and 18th . For the
first time in a long time all 12 4-H members were able to make the
trip. Those attending were; Charles Kincade, Patrick Kincade, Shana
McCool, Claire Nesbitt, Joey Phillips, Josh Ratcliff, Megan
Rockwell, Audra Rubendall, Karen Rumba, Allison Russell, David
Sietsma and Anthony Tatman, along with Roberta and Dale Crabtree and
Kevin and Sherry Underwood as escorts. The costs were very slightly
more than last year.
The
2006 Farm Bureau to Washington DC Leadership School was discussed.
Mary Ann Workman made a motion our county send 6 participants this
next year. Marie McCorkle seconded and the motion carried.
DISTRICT REPORT - Janice Wilson passed out a new County Farm Bureau
Political Survey to be used as a guideline. She spoke of some Young
Farmer’s activities and awards they might win.
The
next District III meeting will be at the Tippecanoe County fair
grounds on November 29th at 6:30 p.m.
The
Young Farmers are to be hosts for the October board meeting.
